Best portable EV charger for renters

If you rent, you usually can't rewire the garage. A portable charger is the one EV charger that needs no installation and moves house with you.

The short answer

For most renters the best option is a 10 A portable charger: it plugs into any standard power point, needs no installation, and adds about 13 km of range per hour, roughly 129 km over a 10-hour night. If your rental provider agrees to a dedicated outlet, a 15 A charger is about 50% faster.

  • No install, no permission needed to plug in: SEVR 10A portable charger.
  • Typical commute covered: a 40 km day takes about 3.1 hours to put back on 10 A.
  • Landlord happy to add an outlet? The EVSE Australia 15A portable charger is about 50% faster. Keep the 10A too if you might move somewhere without one.
  • Use the right outlet: straight into the wall, never a powerboard or extension lead, ideally on its own circuit.

Renter's checklist

  1. Pick the outlet. One near where you park, ideally on its own circuit. Ask your rental provider or agent which outlets share a circuit with the fridge or heaters.
  2. Plug straight into the wall. No powerboards, no extension leads. A car draws full current for hours.
  3. Feel the plug after the first long session. If the plug or outlet is hot, stop and have the outlet checked.
  4. Want 15 A? Ask your rental provider in writing. A new outlet is a change to the property and, in Victoria, prescribed electrical work for a licensed electrician.
  5. Moving out? A portable charger goes with you. A dedicated outlet stays with the property.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can I charge an EV at a rental property?

Yes. A portable Mode 2 charger with a 10 A plug works from a standard Australian power point. Plug straight into the wall, never into a powerboard or extension lead, and ideally use an outlet on its own circuit.

Do I need my landlord's permission to charge an EV?

Plugging a portable charger into an existing outlet doesn't change the property. Installing a new dedicated outlet does, so ask your rental provider in writing before any electrical work.

Is a 10A charger enough if I rent?

For most people, yes. It adds about 13 km per hour, so a 40 km day is back in about 3.1 hours and a 10-hour night adds roughly 129 km.

Can I use an extension lead with a portable EV charger?

No. Powerboards and extension leads aren't built for hours of continuous load. Plug the charger straight into the wall, and stop if the plug or outlet feels hot.

Is it safe to use a 15A to 10A adapter?

No. Adapting a 15 A plug down to a 10 A socket defeats the plug design that stops a 10 A outlet being overloaded. Use a charger with a genuine 10 A plug for 10 A outlets.
