EV charging at home, state by state

The basics are the same everywhere in Australia. The regulator, the paperwork and the price of electricity aren't.

The short answer

In every state and territory you can plug a 10 A portable charger into an existing power point without an electrician. A new 15 A outlet or wall charger must be installed by a licensed electrician, who certifies the work under the local rules. Home charging costs roughly $4.80–$7.47 per 100 km at typical flat rates, and far less off-peak or on solar.

  • Same everywhere: plug-in charging from an existing outlet needs no electrician.
  • New outlet or wall charger: licensed electrician plus your state's compliance certificate.
