Do I need an electrician for EV charging? (Victoria)

Plugging a portable charger into an existing power point needs no electrician. Adding a new outlet or a wall charger does. Here's where the line sits in Victoria.

The short answer

You don't need an electrician to plug a 10 A portable charger into an existing power point. You do need a licensed electrician to install a dedicated 15 A outlet or a wall charger: in Victoria that is prescribed electrical work, and you'll receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

  • 10 A portable charger: no electrician. Use an existing outlet, ideally on its own circuit.
  • 15 A portable charger: needs a dedicated 15 A or 20 A outlet installed by a licensed electrician.
  • 7 kW wall charger: needs a dedicated 32 A circuit and possibly a switchboard upgrade.
  • Older home? Have the circuit checked if your outlet shares it with the fridge or a heater, or the wiring is ageing rubber-insulated cable.

Why it matters

What an electrician checks

A car draws its full rated current for 10+ hours straight. That is a harder job than almost anything else you plug into a house, so the basics matter:

  • Is the circuit shared? An outlet on the same circuit as the fridge or a heater can be overloaded.
  • How old is the wiring? Ageing rubber-insulated cable is the weak link in older homes.
  • Is the outlet rated for the plug? A 15 A load needs a 15 A or 20 A outlet. Never adapt a 15 A plug into a 10 A socket.
  • Is the charger approved? Look for the RCM mark; CE or TÜV alone doesn't count in Australia.

We do not do installs ourselves. Ask a Registered Electrical Contractor for a written quote that covers the dedicated circuit, RCD protection and any switchboard work. What to ask for.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need an electrician to install a 15A outlet for EV charging in Victoria?

Yes. Installing an outlet is prescribed electrical work in Victoria, so it must be done by a licensed electrician who issues a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Do I need an electrician to use a portable EV charger?

Not for a 10 A charger plugged into an existing power point. Plug straight into the wall, never into a powerboard or extension lead, and ideally use an outlet on its own circuit.

What is a Certificate of Electrical Safety?

In Victoria, it is the certificate a licensed electrician issues for prescribed electrical work, such as installing a new outlet or circuit. Keep it with your home's records.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for EV charging?

Not for a portable charger on an existing outlet. A 7 kW wall charger needs a dedicated 32 A circuit, which can mean a switchboard upgrade depending on your home.
